Frequently Asked Questions1. What is a Reformed Episcopal Church?A Reformed Episcopal Church is a congregation which is a constituent member of the Reformed Episcopal Church in the United States and is simultaneously, Biblical, Protestant, and Liturgical in its theology and worship. We have an episcopal form of church government, which means that we have a bishop who oversees the theology and practice of the churches under his episcopal care. 2. Who are your bishops and other leaders? The Most Rev. Leonard W. Riches is Bishop Ordinary of the Diocese of the Northeast & Mid-Atlantic and Presiding Bishop of the Reformed Episcopal Church in the United States. The Right Reverend David L. Hicks is Bishop Co-adjutor of our diocese. In a leadership role among local clergy is The Very Rev. Cedric R. Benner, Dean for the Convocation of New York and Northern New Jersey. 3. What about the Bible? We believe the Bible to be the very Word of God revealed to mankind, and that it is inerrant and infallible. 4. What about Jesus Christ? We believe that Jesus Christ is the only means of eternal salvation. We pray that you come to know Him and His salvation. 5. How are you different from the Episcopal Church, USA?The Reformed Episcopal Church, like its ecclesiastical cousin the ECUSA, is a daughter church of the Church of England. Unlike the ECUSA, we have not adopted the "new theology" of our times. We do not ordain men engaged in immoral behaviors or relationships, nor have we re-ordered the offices of deacon and presbyter to accommodate the political correctness lobby. 6. What are your doctrinal standards? Our doctrinal standards are those of the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion. They have been the doctrinal/theological standards for people of the Anglican Way since the Protestant Reformation. Also see What We Believe. 7. What should I expect if I visit Emmanuel for worship?A warm welcome, majestic hymns, God centered and reverential liturgy, and expository preaching. 8. Who may partake of Holy Communion?Let the liturgy answer: "Our fellow Christians of other branches of Christ's Church, and all who love our Divine Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in sincerity, are affectionately invited to the Lord's Table." (REC Book of Common Prayer, pg. 71) 9. Are children welcome?Absolutely. It is up to you to decide whether or not you wish to have infants with you during worship. However, a nursery is provided for those who need a break from their little ones during Sunday School or worship service. |
